Introduction

M膩tauranga M膩ori is taught every two years with the next intake starting in 2025.

M膩 te ara M膩tauranga M膩ori kei Te Kura Whakangungu Kaiako koutou e whai m艒hiotanga m艒 ng膩 mahi o te kaiako kei ng膩 whare k艒hungahunga me ng膩 kura tuatahi, mai i te taumata reo 2 (51%+ te reo M膩ori). Ka oti t膿nei tohu i a koe, kei a koe ng膩 p奴kenga whakaako ki r艒 Kura Aunoa / Kura Auraki, kei reira e whakanuia ana te reo M膩ori me 艒na tikanga, ng膩 m艒hiotanga o ng膩 take k膩kanorua rua me ng膩 ahurea whakamana i te tipu mai o te tamaiti.

The M膩tauranga M膩ori Initial Teacher Education pathway will equip you to work in whare k艒hungahunga (early childhood) and/or kura tuatahi (primary) settings working at level 2 (51鈥80% te reo M膩ori immersion) or higher. A graduate of the M膩tauranga M膩ori programme has the ability to work in bilingual English medium educational settings, where knowledge of te reo M膩ori me 艒na tikanga, bicultural practice, and culturally empowering pedagogies are valued as a means to support child development.

What will my study involve?

  • He ako kei r艒 horopaki ako reo rua, k膩kanorua, he ako 膩-wh膩nau. He tohu t膿nei m膩 te hunga e ng膩kau nui ana ki te whakap膩kari i 膩 r膩tou m艒hiotanga ki te reo M膩ori me 艒na tikanga. Hei te tau tuatoru o te tohu paetahi, he reo rumaki ng膩 akoranga katoa (81+ te reo M膩ori).

    Learn in a bilingual, bicultural, wh膩nau-style atmosphere. This qualification is open to all who have a commitment to developing competence in te reo M膩ori me 艒na tikanga. By the third year of the degree, the delivery is level 1 (81+% te reo M膩ori聽immersion).

  • He ako 膩-rorohiko, 膩-kanohi kitea hoki te momo ako, n膩 reira, ka taea te ako mai tawhiti. Heoi an艒 me matua tae 膩-tinana ki 膿tahi w膩hanga o ia tau, he noho marae ki te hau k膩inga o K膩i Tahu ia tau.

    This is a mixed method style of delivery with content being available online, therefore there is the ability to learn from anywhere. Kanohi ki te kanohi (face-to-face) delivery will also be included in the programme through scheduled block w膩nanga each year and two noho marae each year.

  • Ko ng膩 wheako mahi ngaio, ar膩 ng膩 akoranga 'Mana Ako', kei r艒 whare k艒hungahunga me ng膩 kura tuatahi M膩ori he w膩hanga matua kia m膩rama p奴 ki ng膩 膩huatanga o te horopaki ako me ng膩 mahi o te kaiako.

    Professional Practice Exploration experiences may occur in whare k艒hungahunga (early childhood centres), bilingual primary, and kura kaupapa M膩ori settings throughout your degree.

Te reo entry courses

A selection hui will occur alongside your wh膩nau to evaluate your te reo M膩ori proficiency level.

  • For those with no or limited te reo M膩ori proficiency at entry, you will be guided to complete TREO110 OR AKOT110 in Summer School before starting the programme.
  • For those with some knowledge of te reo M膩ori (basic 鈥 conversational), you will follow the normal course programme outlined above including the Mana Reo courses.
  • For those with a high proficiency of te reo M膩ori, you may receive Recognition of Prior Learning for AKOM192.
  • For those with a high proficiency in te reo M膩ori me 艒na tikanga, you may receive Recognition of Prior Learning for AKOM192, AKOM293, and/or AKOM394 (your ability will determine how many of these courses). Alternatively, you may take reo rumaki (M膩ori language immersion) Summer School courses in the second and third year of the degree to further strengthen your confidence and competence to teach in and through te reo M膩ori 鈥 TREO180 and TREO280.

Kaiako with skills in te reo M膩ori and m膩tauranga M膩ori are highly valued in Aotearoa in both English medium and M膩ori medium settings.

Bicultural knowledge and competence is essential for work in educational policy, support services, and other fields that involve working with and for people.

Career pathways could include:

  • culturally responsive pedagogies leader/advisor.
